Jan 1, 1858 - Morning - Shieikan Dojo, Entrance to the Main House
After taking Kondo-sensei and Fude-san their breakfast trays, I go and post myself near the front entrance to the house. With today being the first day of the new year, it would normally be a busy time for the dojo anyway. We'll have students dropping by all morning to pay their respects to Sensei and to the Young Master. But today will be even busier than that since this is also the day we'll be having Souji's genpuku. There will be lots of folks coming to drop off small gifts and extend their congradulations on his entrance into manhood.

Obviously Sensei is going to be very busy preparing for the ceremony and can't greet the guests himself. So I've volunteered to do it. It's the least I can do to help I figure...

Fifteen years ago, I changed the dirty diapers of a certain annoying little giggling roll of pooping mochi. And now, that giggling roll is a man. Well now, I never would have imagined my brother to be so accomplished.

Come on, Mitsu! Hustle!

When has Edo become so...big? Last I checked, I could get anywhere in ten minutes. But here I am, walking for more than twenty in the snow, and I'm still not at the dojo. Or did I miss another turn? Huff.

And then, when I feel that the gods have been conspiring against me, I see Gen-san standing out on the street. "Gen-san!" I call out to him. I suddenly become conscious of my appearance; I don't look too flustered, do I? "I made it!"

"Gen-san!"

I turn about when I hear my name called and grin when I realize that it's Mitsu-chan.

"I made it!"

"Ah, so you did! Souji will be so glad! But come on inside. It's freezing out here. I alreay have some water heated for tea in the kitchen. Or I did. I hope Toshi didn't drink it all up..."

I lead the way into the house. "It's hard to believe our little Soujirou is already a young man. Why, it seems like he came to the dojo only yesterday," I say, smiling as I recall those early days.

"Tea is winter's best friend, wouldn't you say? I can hardly wait." He ushers me in and the thought of a warm blanket and a cup of steaming anything is just marvelous.

It's hard to believe our little Soujirou is already a young man. Why, it seems like he came to the dojo only yesterday.

And I even dressed up for the occasion, too! "I'm his sister, and I can hardly believe it myself!" As any sister would. I love my brother viciously...and as such, I'm entitled to smother him in all ways possible. "From swaddling cloths to the finest silk. Children grow up too fast these days, don't they?"

I ask him about the latest scoop around the dojo as we make our way inside. I do hope everything is well.

"I'm his sister, and I can hardly believe it myself!" I listen to Mitsu-chan's excited chatter about her little brother with a grin. "From swaddling cloths to the finest silk. Children grow up too fast these days, don't they?"

"Hai, that they do." I feel a bit sad and old suddenly. I can remember when Kondo-san himself was just a youth starting out at this dojo. Since I'm originally from Hino, I met Toshi when he was even younger than that. And then Souji... I've watched all these boys grow up to become fine young men. I don't suppose any of them will need old Gen-san for much longer...

Ah, what am I thinking? Just because they're grown now doesn't mean they'll stop needing help with their problems. Actually, it probably means they'll need my help more than ever.

Then Mitsu-chan starts asking me about what's been going on around the dojo. I chuckle. "It's about the same as it always is. I guess the only thing that could be considered remotely big news is that letter Kojima-san sent to us the other day. He mentioned that he might have some important announcement to make to us all soon. No one knows what he has planned though. I only know that Hijikata Kiroku is involved in it somehow." I give Mitsu-chan a pointed look. I'm sure I don't have to remind her of all the problems between the two Hijikata brothers.

As we approach the kitchen, I start hoping there is some hot water left. That Toshi! He drinks the stuff like it was... Well, I guess a good bit of it is made out of water, but it's still too expensive to drink it by the gallons! It's a wonder that boy doesn't float away.

"They're always up to something. If not trying to slice each other's throats, it's something sneaky and underhanded." Or maybe I'm just exaggerating. Nevertheless, it's not impossible considering the bad blood between them. "I hope Toshizou-san isn't snagged in it. That poor boy has had to deal with a lot more than keeping his brothers from their infantile squabbles."

My goodness...my toes are freezing! "Oh, by the way. I booked us a small room at the Watako. We can eat lunch there after Soujirou's genpuku, ne?" It took me two weeks to get a booking, but the kindly old Sachiko-san owed me a favor. I just hope Soujirou doesn't have any plans immediately after his genpuku...

"They're always up to something. If not trying to slice each other's throats, it's something sneaky and underhanded."

I glance back at Mitsu-chan. That's a bit of an exaggeration, but...

"I hope Toshizou-san isn't snagged in it. That poor boy has had to deal with a lot more than keeping his brothers from their infantile squabbles."

I laugh. "Acutally, it was the problems between Toshi and Kiroku-san that I was referring to. Though I'm sure that, whatever it is, Tamejiro-san will manage to be right in the middle of it."

Most of the on-going fued between Tamejiro and Kiroku has revolved around Toshi actually. If Kiroku isn't accusing Tamejiro of corrupting their youngest brother's morales, Tamejiro is taking Kiroku to task for interferring in Toshi's life so much...

"Oh, by the way. I booked us a small room at the Watako. We can eat lunch there after Soujirou's genpuku, ne?"

Mitsu-chan's voice reminds me that I've no time to mope over all the bickering in the Hijikata family. I turn and give her a smile. "Ah, that sounds very good. I'm surprised you were able to manage it on such short notice!"

We arrive at the kitchen door just then and I can hear voices inside. One of them is definitely Toshi's...

I frown. Is he saying something about teaching Souji about the floating world? I'd better not let Mitsu-chan hear that!

"So, Mitsu-chan, here we are! I'll get you that tea now," I tell her in an unusally loud voice. I just hope Souji and Toshi hear me!

Alright so I have Souji and Toshi talking about the birds and the bees in one room and Mitsu and the old man trying to make the world (Souji and Toshi...the world...but to Gen-san and Mitsu, what's the difference?) a better place. Oh Dear Kami, someone please put me out of my misery

I mean, what's the bother? Toshi and Souji are so sexually dysfunctional in their unspoken attraction that if ever they were to get it on, it would be without the aid of Dumb and Dumber.

These people are going to drive me to drink, I’ll tell ya…
